My parents are as different as they come. My dad, Max Gordan Reid, was born in 1931. He grew up in a the teeny town of Lund, Nevada. My dad is very shy and has never had much to say. His life was spent working on farms and ranches.
My mom, Mollie Kaye Griffin, was born in 1946. She grew up in Sumter, South Carolina. She has a great artistic talent. My mom is outgoing and not afraid to speak her mind. She was a stay at home mom until around 1985 when she started teaching art class at Lund Elementary and Lund High School.
With a 15 year age gap and most of the country separating them they ended up together.
My mom was attending college at BYU. She didn't have any where to go for Thanksgiving. So she went to Lund with a friend of hers. That is where they met. They dated for the rest of the school year.
My mom tells stories of my dad driving a cattle truck through Provo and picking her up to ride with him to deliver the cattle. She remembers it to be very exciting.
My dad, being a man of few words, asked my mom if she would marry him while they were in the field feeding cows. They were sitting in the truck and my dad laid his head in my moms lap and asked her if she was planning on going to school in the fall. My mom replied are you planning on me going back to school? He answered Nope. And they were engaged.
They were Married in the St. George, Utah Temple on September 3, 1965.
